no wonder. apparently there are several versions of butterfly. what is normally performed today is much shorter and watered down than the original 1904 version, which virtually no one does. city opera of new york did a revival a few years ago, and it was met with cool reviews from the times.
anyway. apparently the longer version makes more sense.
