saw madama butterfly at hso yesterday. was good. cio cio san was sung by a latonia moore, a black soprano from HOUSTON!
shes tiny, but with a pretty powerful voice. it fits this repertoire like a glove. she really does wonderful things on stage. it was nice to hear her. we chatted a bit afterwards. it was awesome.
and ive decided that i want to sing pinkerton. i mean...its not a long role at all. you have the first act, and then youre not seen again until the third, where youre only on stage for like ten minutes. what an easy job!
ive also noticed that butterfly is...in many ways...NOT a really good opera. the first act is WONDERFUL but the rest...it just seems to go all downhill. the music i dont find as exciting with the exception of un bel di or tu tu tu piccolo iddio. other than that...its just weird.
like the ensemble number when kate pinkerton, pinkerton, and sharpless come to get the child. it just seems so...weird. so out of place. maybe it was the production. i dont know.
all in all it was a good evening at the opera. and before hand i treated myself to a steak dinner and a glass (or 3) of wine at this super nice italian ristorante near johannes brahms platz.
i can afford it since im not travelling anywhere for spring break.
